Our urban design concept for East 63rd Street proposes a series of urban nodes for community gathering lined with retail and dining establishments and community services. New buildings in this stretch of 63rd street would be in dialogue with each other, configured to actively shape urban-scaled outdoor “living rooms” which would eventually extend eastward along 63rd Street all the way to Jackson Park. The urban nodes would serve as dynamic community activity hubs, with cafés, stores, daycare facilities and other amenities to sustain the community and spur future economic development in the neighborhood. The urban design strategy would foreground social and environmental resiliency. Urban nodes with seating promote social activity and community gathering, while shorter crosswalks and enhanced lighting improve safety of neighborhood residents. Rain gardens in the parkway running between nodes capture and clean surface stormwater runoff while promoting biodiversity, and porous paving in the node’s hardscape plaza and alley support sustainable stormwater management.
