The Erie Serpent is an integrated canal crossing, climbing facility and waterfront recreational landscape. Comprised of an iconic perforated tubular bridge structure and public landings on the north and south banks of the canal, the project serves as a catalyst for re-imagining a community’s relationship with the Empire State Trail and the Erie Canal. The new bridge is designed as an iconic structure and intended to create a memorable landmark on the canal that begins a another chapter in its history. The existing guard gate structure is repurposed as a climbing facility. Together with the new bridge, it serves as a catalyst for a phased master plan for the site that includes a series of recreational spaces on either side of the waterway that re-envision the canal as a recreational amenity serving the town and university.
