This pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in Lemont, Illinois links the downtown to parks and recreation sites north of the city. The 190-foot span bridge is a pre-engineered tied arch structure clad with expanded metal made of weathering steel to reference its industrial surroundings. The cable-supported metal cladding is coordinated with the bridge truss panels, and it is expanded in a graduated manner to be more open at eye level, allowing views up and down the canal for bridge-goers. The bridge will host events as well as serve as a canal crossing, and its iconic curved shape is intended to give it a signature presence for the town. Lighting integrated into the bridge pathway gives the structure a lantern-like quality at night, creating a landmark structure that can be seen from all directions.
