Chicago Illinois These offices, for a Chicago development and real estate company, occupy the top floor of a loft building in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. Project requirements were to provide a serene and welcoming environment to company guests, provide office and meeting space for the company employees and integrate the owner’s extensive collection of Asian art. The design pursued a sustainable strategy of natural renewable materials and recycled materials throughout to complement the art collection. Bamboo floors and ceilings define the main guest area with live bamboo in planters below a new skylight cut into the existing roof to allow daylight into the space and reduce the need for artificial lighting. A textured wall of crosscut bamboo terminates the space, and bamboo veneered niches randomly dot the office areas to provide space for the owner’s Asian art collection.
